This book and rhyme has always been a favourite of mine to read to children. Infants and toddlers have fun with the actions of the story while preschoolers love verbally re-enacting this dramatic book! During Music and Movement time daily, we have enjoyed acting out this book several times!!! Repetition is key!
  • We talked about over, under and through since these directional cues are a major focus within the story. Then we acted them out in our class tent.
  • We created a visual map of the bear hunt to follow and learn the sequence of the story.
  • Toddlers enjoyed sensory bottles related to each scene of the story
  • Children showed creativity through sensory collage art
  • Children enjoyed pretending to go on a bear hunt outside!

Self Help Skills: Getting Dressed for Winter

12/8/2015

Children are driven to be independent and when they feel accomplishment it affects a child’s self-esteem in a positive way. Through daily experience and opportunities to practise these important skills, children will feel proud of their success when going outside! We continue go out outside daily in the Winter for fresh air and to play in the snow.

Getting Dressed for Winter involves:
Gross motor: lifting arms and legs in specific coordinated motions and balancing to take off shoes and snow pants
Fine motor: being able to use fingers to manipulate small objects (zippers, velcro, buttons, buckles, and laces)
Cognitive: being able to understand the sequence of putting on clothing and to think about how seasons and temperature affect what should be worn

Community Workers

11/19/2015

Expanding Oral Language and Social Skills through Dramatic Play
Community Workers

  • We have been exploring books related to community workers and their roles. We point to pictures, we describe what we see and we make connections to Real-Life.
  • Through music , rhymes and repetition children build on language skills . Children had a big interest  in role playing as Doctors. We sang “ Miss Polly had a Dolly who was Sick Sick Sick” and “ 5 Little Monkeys” where Mama calls the Doctor!
  •  Our new Fire Station Wooden House has given the children an opportunity to work co-operatively and as a team. Children work as a team to “set up” the fire house furniture and make a story line. Sharing can be difficult task for children who are building their self-regulation skills.
  •  We ordered toys for our daycare and waited for the Mail Carrier to deliver it to the door. Through this experience, we started talking about the Post Office. Children made “mail” and envelopes for their parents.
  • Children are enjoying the community worker puppets and dressing up like doctors, firefighters and chefs!
  • Infants and toddlers build on their eye-hand co-ordination as they push the wooden fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, rescue helicopters and more!

Inuksuk Inquiry

Inuksuk Project
The traditional meaning of the Inuksuk is "Someone was here" or "You are on the right path." The Inuksuk forms  a variety of purposes: as navigation , to mark a place of respect , or to indicate migration routes or places where fish can be found.
  • We compared rocks by size and shape
  • We used water colours on a wood canvas to create a background for our Inuksuk.
  • We glued  textured paper onto our canvas.
  • We compared different photographs of the Inuksuk and the meaning behind each one.
  • We used  wooden blocks to build our own Inuksuk. We discovered how to balance the different sized blocks
  • We counted how many rocks or blocks we needed to build.
  • We read many book to learn more !

Ask your child, which one did you like best?

  • We ripped paper ( fine motor skill) to glue on the apples and sorted the colours.
  • We read the books about apples, farms, and seeds.
  • We helped put apples in the crockpot to cook Applesauce. We added cinnamon and it tasted yummy!
  • We played “Apple picking” with small baskets and laminated apple prints. We counted how many apples in each basket.
